The Competition — What's Out There and Where We Fit¶

What's Actually Out There¶
If you search for job-application helpers, you'll find a lot of noise. Here's what exists, in plain terms:
Open-source tools (free, but you build it yourself)
- GitHub projects like ai-job-search and AIHawk let developers roll their own solutions
- Transparent code, but require technical setup
- Usually locked to one job board (LinkedIn) or one country
- Some automatically submit applications to LinkedIn — which violates LinkedIn's terms and risks account bans
Bulk auto-apply services (spend money, spray-and-pray) - LazyApply, Sonara, Massive: You pay ($99–$999/year), they blast your resume to hundreds of job boards while you sleep - Sounds great until you realize: - Employers hate spam applications - LinkedIn can restrict or suspend accounts for prohibited automation; users of auto-apply tools report warnings, restrictions, and bans. - They don't tailor your resume to each job — just mass-submit a generic version - Your data lives in their cloud servers (you don't control it) - Some public reviews and analyses report very low callback rates (anecdotal, varies by role level)
Autofill browser extensions (cheaper, honest, limited) - Simplify, JobRight, Teal, Careerflow: Install a browser extension, it fills out your info, you hit Submit - Free or cheap ($15–$40/month) - Honest about what they do (no false promises of auto-apply) - But: Your data is in their cloud, no interview prep, tied to your browser on one device

Where WorkWingman is Different¶
1. Your Data Stays on Your Computer¶
Every competitor stores your resume, application history, and personal info in their cloud servers. You log in to their dashboard to see your applications.
WorkWingman keeps everything on your machine — in plain-text JSON files and a password-protected vault. Your application history is a file you own, not locked behind a vendor's paywall. If the company goes out of business, your data doesn't disappear.
2. You Stay in Control¶
We don't auto-submit anything. Ever. You draft the application, review it, and you click Submit. This sounds slower, but it prevents: - Getting your LinkedIn banned (like LazyApply users do) - Sending poorly-matched applications (like LazyApply's 0% callback rate on senior jobs) - Looking like a bot to employers
It's more honest, and it's faster in the long run because your applications are actually good.
3. Use Your Own AI Key (Or Ours Later)¶
If you have a Claude or Gemini subscription, just bring your API key. WorkWingman uses your key to draft better resumes and cover letters. No markup on AI costs, no new subscription.
(Later, we'll offer a managed-AI option for people who don't want to fuss with keys, but that's optional.)
4. Interview Prep Included and Verified¶
Careerflow charges $300+/year to add interview prep. WorkWingman includes it for free in the core app.
Better: the study content is verified. We don't let LLMs just make up "interview tips" — we check them against real sources before you study them.
5. Works on Real Enterprise Job Boards¶
We've tested on production Workday (the ATS used by huge companies like Amazon, Microsoft, CVS). Other tools claim "90% coverage" but fail on Workday in real use.
6. No Subscription to Apply¶
Core autofill + form filling + draft suggestions are all free. No paywall to actually use the app for your job search. (We make money from optional backups, coaches/schools, and later, verification.)
What We're Not Great At (And We're Honest About It)¶
We're Desktop-Only¶
No phone app, no mobile browser extension. If you job-browse on your phone, this won't help with that. But if you're applying on a laptop (which most serious applicants do), you're fine.
We Don't Do Bulk Auto-Apply¶
If you want to fire off 500 applications in a week without looking at them, LazyApply is your tool (and expect 0% callbacks). We're for people who want to spend 10 minutes tailoring each application and have real conversations with employers.
Our ATS Support List is Smaller (And More Honest)¶
We support 15 systems with real fill engines — 6 we auto-apply through (Workday, Greenhouse, iCIMS, Lever, Paycor, Oracle) and 9 we assist with after you sign in (UKG, ADP, Paycom, SuccessFactors, Microsoft Careers, Avature, Amazon, Google, Dayforce) — plus more ATS forms we detect for copy-paste assist. We don't claim "90% coverage" because that's usually marketing fluff. We tell you exactly which systems we've tested on.
No Resume Builder¶
You bring your own resume (from Word, Canva, whatever). We don't rebuild it for you — we just help you update it per job. This keeps the app focused and lets resume tools stay specialist tools.
The Real Competition¶
The honest truth: most job seekers aren't choosing between WorkWingman and Simplify or Teal. They're choosing between:
- Doing it manually (paste resume, fill forms 50 times, get burnt out)
- Using a spam-cannon tool (LazyApply: fast but 0% callbacks and account bans)
- Hoping LinkedIn's native job fill actually works (it mostly doesn't)
We're competing against manual labor and desperation, not just other apps. That's why we exist.
Where We Win (Strategy)¶
WorkWingman wins on three things that matter:
- Privacy — Your data is yours. Not ours, not for sale.
- Trust — You're always in control. No surprises, no bans, no fake skills added to your resume.
- Honesty — We tell you exactly what we do, where we're behind, and who we are (a small, founder-led Black-owned business).
Competitors own "speed" and "volume." Speed is a race to the bottom. We own the story that matters: you come first.
